Rumor Mongering: Ryan Sessegnon, Life Long Liverpool Fan
Because of course he is.
Over the past couple of summers, Liverpool have been linked to one of the mostly highly regarded young English fullbacks, Ryan Sessegnon. I guess Liverpool can never have too many highly regarded young English fullbacks.
Regardless, Liverpool’s interest cooled on the player—either from the price, or inexperience, or both—and Jurgen Klopp went a different direction, signing Andrew Robertson from relegated Hull City. Thanks for that, Kloppo.
Now two years older, often deployed further forward, and having been relegated from the Premier League himself with Fulham, word on the street is that Sessegnon is once again looking for a move to a big club, or maybe even Manchester United.
In fact, it is United who reportedly have made first contact with the player, according to The Express. However, Sessegnon is reportedly not keen on a move to Old Trafford because “close family sources” tell the publication that he’s a boyhood Liverpool fan. Of course he is. A move to United, the player realizes, would forever ruin his chance to play for Liverpool.
Another option, according to the report, is to stay in London, but make a move to Tottenham—thereby keeping the option of an eventual move to Merseyside open.
This story seems to be really grasping at straws, but there are several plausible explanations. First, there is the “once a transfer target, always a transfer target” rule that the media so adores. This can be applied equally to both Liverpool and Spurs, both of whom have shown interest in the player before. Second, this could be one of those rumors concocted out of whole cloth, with the intention of getting as many big team names into the story as possible. Third, and finally, there could be legitimate interest (or an agent trying to gin up said interest).
For now, we can all move along with our lives until we hear something a little more concrete.
