Kirkland: Mignolet must decide what he wants to do

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland thinks Jurgen Klopp would help Simon Mignolet find a new club if the player asked for it, according to the Express.

Despite reports suggesting the Belgian stopper is set to stay at Anfield for another season, rumours about his impending exit continue to persist, with Crystal Palace the latest club linked with a move for the 31-year-old.

And Kirkland believes Mignolet’s time at Liverpool could soon come to an end, depending on what the goalkeeper himself wants.

“He’s not going to play at Liverpool if Alisson is fit. We know that,” Kirkland said.

“Simon is a top goalkeeper in his own right but Alisson had gone to the next level, which we needed.

“So Simon has to decide whether he wants to stay and is happy to play the bit-part role, which it will be unless Alisson gets injured or suddenly has a loss of form. Or, does he want to go and play football?

“The good thing about what Simon has done is if he went to Jurgen now and said he wanted to go and play [elsewhere], after the way he’s been and the professionalism he’s shown this season I think Jurgen will help him do that. But obviously he wants to keep him.

“Simon has got to sit down and decide what he really wants to do. He’s still got many years to go, I would be surprised if he didn’t want to go and play somewhere.

“That’s why I had to leave Wigan, because I wanted to go and play and I went to Sheffield Wednesday and played there.

“Only Simon will know what he wants to do, but I’d be surprised after playing for so many years and still being relatively young for a goalkeeper if he didn’t want more game time.

“It’s going to be so hard to walk away from Liverpool, with where they are at the minute, the way the club is, the way Jurgen has got everyone together and the fans.

“They are massively on the up and the sky’s the limit for Liverpool. So for Simon to walk away from that it’s got to be purely for his passion to go and start more games.”
