Should Liverpool Supporters Prepare for a Quiet Transfer Window?

It’s been mostly quiet on Liverpool’s end since the transfer window opened. Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno have said goodbye and others are expected to leave but there’s been very little chatter about incoming players. Rumours are everywhere and nowhere, peaking up from behind old, dented trash cans to shout-whisper “Mbappe seen parachuting from his custom scooter-copter into Peter Moore’s lap at Melwood, pass it on.”

Winning the Champions League and generally being amazing make Liverpool attractive to many star players. The money is also said to be available if Jürgen Klopp deems a player out there in the player-verse to be a good fit for his squad. John Henry has stated that winning the Premier League is the goal for Liverpool next season and the funds would be available to help that happen. So, that’s all good.

Several high profile young talents have been linked with Liverpool over the passed month and the club have denied those links. Nicolas Pepe is not a target. Matthijs de Ligt is not a target. Bruno Fernandes is not a target. Kylian Mbappe is obviously still a target and nobody can take that away from me.

The window is still young and there’s plenty of time to stir up some action but all the recent hubbub over transfer rumours has produced a couple of curious pieces in the Liverpool Echo that hint at a call to supporters to bring our expectations way down.

Both Paul Gorst and Connor Dunn wrote about the likelihood of a quiet window. Both made a point of mentioning FSG had not set a budget for transfers and any decisions would be made my Klopp. What will come to pass, in the end? We don’t know. But it’s clear that there’s some bracing going on in the event that Liverpool don’t or are unable to bring more quality into the team.

The club have their targets noted. There’s a plan, like always. And if a surprise player becomes available, a la, Alisson, Michael Edwards is advised to call Mbappe immediately, even if Kylian’s in the bath.

Strange and slightly unsettling but unless I’m reading it wrong the sentiment from club sources is to keep our heads out of the clouds. There is the possibility that the players with the right fit won’t walk into Melwood this summer and Liverpool will field a surprisingly similar team next season to the one just finished. That team won the Champions League and lost just one match all season in the Premier League so, sure, I’m okay with it. It’s just that I like to introduce the new toys to the old toys and if it’s just old toys at the mixer, I’m going to have to change my whole speech.
