Jürgen Klopp Dampens Your Hopes for More Toys

The Liverpool manager wants you to expect nothing, and then maybe you’ll get something small.

Hidden in Jürgen Klopp’s post-Tranmere interview was another not-so-thinly veiled message for Liverpool supporters to prepare for a quiet transfer window. We’re mostly resigned to it at this point. And it makes sense that Klopp doesn’t need first team quality players because the team is already exceptional.

A lot of cash has been splashed in previous windows in order to bring in Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson among others. This is the summer of getting Naby Keita locked in and injury free, of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s glorious return, and the rising youth.

Klopp was asked if any new football stars were expected to arrive and he’s basically saying, “No.”

“We brought them in already, only you don’t realise it,” said Klopp.

“Rhian Brewster, Oxlade-Chamberlain, didn’t play last year—all the young boys today. They are all new players for us, that’s all good.

“The transfer market is open until August 8. The whole of Europe had the idea to close the transfer window early and the only country that did it was then England, so we close it now three weeks before all the others.

“We will see what we do but I don’t think it will be the biggest transfer window of all time.”

There should be plenty of minutes during pre-season for those players yet to find a permanent place in the manager’s plans. Already Klopp’s young players were performing well against Tranmere along with a sprinkling of first team regulars.

We also didn’t really get a full season out of Fabinho and having another pre-season with Klopp, learning all the tactical nuances of his role is invaluable.

Surely, a couple of supporting players will be added the squad before the window shuts. But there’s reason to believe that this same team as it is would be ready and able to compete at the same level they did last season.
