Liverpool “keen to reward” midfielder with new deal

James Milner remains in line for a new contract at Liverpool, according to the Echo.

The veteran midfielder arrived at Anfield on a free transfer in 2015 and has gone on to become a key player under Jurgen Klopp.

He recently returned to pre-season training and promptly beat a number of younger players to first place in the gruelling lactate test, showcasing his considerable and enduring fitness.

And despite entering the final year of his contract at the club, Milner remains a crucial part of Klopp’s plans.

As such, the 33-year-old is set for a contract extension to take him beyond summer 2020 at Anfield.

The club are reportedly “keen to reward the midfielder with an extension” as just reward for his top-quality services over the last four years.

Liverpool’s policy of retaining current players with new deals has helped stabilise the club under FSG and Klopp, and keeping the vice-captain at Anfield for longer will no doubt further settle a team already well on the right track.
