Official: Divock Origi Signs New Long-Term Liverpool Deal

The 24-year-old Belgian striker has committed his future to Liverpool.

Having been promised a significant role for the club this season by Jürgen Klopp following his return to the club for pre-season, over the past week, expectations that Divock Origi would sign a new long-term Liverpool deal grew.

Today, those expectations have become an official announcement. Today, Divock Origi has signed a new long-term deal that will tie the 24-year-old to the club through the summer of 2024, and Origi says staying was always his preference.

“The feeling was always that I wanted to stay,” said Origi of his new deal. “There is something special going on here. I just wanted to speak with the club first, but the feeling was always that I wanted to stay and extend my contract.

“It’s an amazing club, we have a good group, the staff are amazing. We’re still young so there’s a lot of potential in the group. I’m just having fun in training and on the pitch. Those are all important factors as a player.”

It wasn’t always clear or obvious that he would stay. Origi came close to departing the club at least twice last season, first over the summer and then again in January when the striker came close to joining Wolverhampton.

In both cases, the player’s desire to turn things around at Liverpool and to earn himself a first team role at the club were key stumbling blocks preventing the deals getting done and, in the end, that perseverance was rewarded.

It’s also fair to say that Origi’s perseverance worked out very, very well for the Reds, with the player’s goals in Europe key to winning their sixth European Cup. And so now there is a new deal—and the expectation of an expanded role.

“At the end of my career, I want to sit back and be proud that I used all of my gifts and talents,” he added. “I think the next years are going to be very special—prime years, maybe—and I’m going to try to use them to the fullest.”
