Rangers Hope Liverpool Can’t Find Buyer for Ryan Kent

Steven Gerrard wants the winger on loan but Liverpool’s preference is a permanent deal.

Rangers have made no secret of the fact that they’d like Ryan Kent back for another season, but Steven Gerrard today made it clear that the Scottish club can only afford to bring him back in a loan deal—while Liverpool are hoping for a permanent sale.

That means that Kent could still end up back in Scotland, where he scored six goals and nine assists in 43 total appearances last season. But if he does it won’t be until late in the transfer window if it’s clear there are no willing permanent takers.

“The only way we’ll have a conversation is if Liverpool phone and say he’s available to go on loan,” Gerrard said following Rangers’ pre-season victory over Oxford. “I’ve made that pretty clear [we want him], but that is in Liverpool’s hands at the moment.”

According to past reports, Liverpool are seeking around £12M for Kent, who has joined up with for pre-season and is expected to take part in Thursday’s friendly against Tranmere as the Reds get into their month of preparations for the 2019-20 season.

To date, there have been no especially reliable reports concerning which other clubs—if any—might be interested in Kent for the 2019-20 season and if that interest would be to take him on loan or to make a permanent deal.
