The 16 Players Returning to Start Liverpool’s Pre-Season

The cones are coming out. Liverpool’s pre-season begins on Saturday.

Pre-season commences on Saturday and it’s about time. Let the running begin. Andreas Kornmayer has his devious cardio schedule all planned out and Jürgen Klopp is just going to let Kornmayer do his worst to the sixteen poor souls who will arrive to Melwood this weekend.

The list of players arriving is a hodgepodge of Liverpool’s various tiers of experience. There will be the returning loanees, the Melwood youths, the veterans, and a couple of marquee names to round things out.

Anderson Arroyo, Rhian Brewster, Nathaniel Clyne, Fabinho, Joe Gomez, Ryan Kent, Ki Jana Hoever, Curtis Jones, Adam Lallana, Joël Matip, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Nathaniel Phillips, Sepp Van den Berg, Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn.

That’s seven defenders, six midfielders, and three forwards. Not a goalkeeper to be found. But if we ask very nicely I’ll bet Jose Enrique will come back and give it one more go between the sticks for old times’ sake.

The remaining players will stagger back into pre-season training as the weeks go on. And Kornmayer can’t wait to inflict yet more fierce jogging on the late returners.

So, the football is back. Or very nearly back. And before we know it, Liverpool will be in the U.S. and then the season will start and we can all be happy again.
