Ian Wright fumes over shocking VAR call against Newcastle

Ian Wright was furious with VAR on Saturday after Liverpool were denied a penalty despite Jamaal Lascelles wrestling Joel Matip to the ground in the penalty area.
The Reds were 1-0 down at Anfield in a game that looked like it could turn into a poor one for the home side and supporters were incensed by Andre Marriner and his VAR team’s refusal to award a penalty to Matip.
The Cameroonian jumped to meet a corner in the box but Lascelle’s had his arm wrapped around Matip’s neck, clearly impeding his ability to score for Liverpool at a crucial point in the game.
Wright was furious with VAR, asking on live TV: “Why would they not look at that and say that’s a penalty, man?”
“What do you need to see there? Why don’t they go across to the thing? It’s right there? It’s annoying. I’m annoyed with that.”
Wright is absolutely spot-on as there are clear issues with the way VAR is currently implemented as the video assistant referees will only intervene if there is a “clear and obvious error” from the on-field official.
What this means with regards to the Matip penalty is that there wasn’t a unanimous agreement in the review room that the Lascelles infringement warranted a penalty.
Worrying.
