Liverpool Facing Carabao Cup Investigation

The English Football League is investigating the Reds for fielding an ineligible player.

Liverpool are somehow embroiled in an investigation over an administrative mistake made during their third round Carabao Cup win against the MK Dons. The game itself was an excellent re-introductions to several young players—including The New Messi, Harvey Elliott—but somewhere in that introduction, the Reds appear to have made a misstep.

Pedro Chirivella, who spent a large part of last season on loan in Spain with Extremadura, came into the game at the 63rd minute, but apparently no one in the club realised that they needed to get him a new clearance with the intervention of the Football Association and not just submit the paperwork and call it done. This is the stuff of nightmares for those of us terrified of bureaucracy.

The club released an official statement saying: “The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players. We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

The EFL will investigate—and have full powers to do so—and decide whether this warrants a reprimand or expulsion from the tournament. It’s probably too much to ask that they spend the same amount of time and resources on investigating cases of racial abuse, homophobic slurs, and misogyny and domestic abuse in the sport, but what do we know?

Liverpool will discover what their punishment is to be this week.
