Van Dijk: There’s Plenty of Room for Improvement

The Dutch international talks about being on top of the league and why it means absolutely nothing.

There’s nothing quite like waking up as September comes to an end and realising that Liverpool are still (still!) at the top of the Premier League by five whole points. But lest we get carried away calculating how many points we’d have if Liverpool continue their streak of never losing anything ever, Virgil van Dijk is on hand to keep us humble.

“We’re almost in October and the busy period will come,” van Dijk said when asked whether or not the team was feeling chuffed about where things stand. “There are still so many games left and the only thing we focus on is the game ahead of us.”

“We don’t want to look at the others because there’s no point doing that. Everyone realises that as well because last season we saw how it turned quickly. We just want to focus on the game ahead of us.”

“It’s the media who love statistics,” he added. “The reality is we have nothing at the moment. We want to continue to do well and there’s still plenty of room for improvement.”

That’s definitely an apt assessment of this weekend’s game against Sheffield United where Liverpool just managed to walk away with the three points they needed.

“They made it very hard for us and I’m very happy we got the three points,” Van Dijk said about Sheffield. “We have to win every game, that’s how it is. Everyone knew how tough it would be. It’s a great place to come, passionate fans, a great atmosphere. It was a tough game.”

The team will be completely focused on their next Champions League match this Wednesday against Salzburg. Hopefully, the Reds have some time to recover before then.
