Liverpool fans say Fabinho is better than Mascherano

During the Napoli vs. Liverpool game last night, I shared a tweet saying I thought Fabinho is better than Javier Mascherano ever was for the Reds and received a bucket load of replies.

While the Brazilian is still yet to win the number of trophies his Argentinian counterpart did throughout his career, Mascherano didn’t win anything at Liverpool and often seemed a little rash and reckless.

The control and tenacity that Fabinho has brought to Liverpool has gone under the radar somewhat but the former AS Monaco star is slowly but surely getting the recognition he deserves.

His first-half display at Stadio San Paolo was particularly impressive and one of the best I have ever seen from a holding midfielder in the Champions League and it’s a pity the game ended in the way it did.

Masch was brilliant defensively. Fabinho is same quality and wins most of his headers. Offers more in terms of passing and going forward too.

Liverpool won the Champions League and finished second in the Premier League with 97 points in Fabinho’s first season at the club and while he obviously wasn’t the only impactful player in that incredible year he was certainly vital.

It’s no coincidence that the first time Liverpool win one of the big two competitions is the first year in roughly a decade that the Reds had a world-class specialist defensive midfielder protecting their back four.

Jurgen Klopp has an incredibly balanced team and will be extremely confident of his side’s chances of winning more silverware this season.
