Liverpool fans say Xabi Alonso should never have been sold
In an overwhelming response to one of our Tweets on Thursday night, over 500 Liverpool fans told us who they wish the club didn’t sell in the past.
Before Jurgen Klopp became manager, the summer transfer window was terrifying for Liverpool fans as it almost always meant one of the club’s biggest stars was set to leave.
The likes of Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho left the club before their prime years, leaving the Reds with a lot of money but a below-par side.
The one player that most supporters feel should never have left was Xabi Alonso, arguably the greatest passer to ever grace the Premier League.
Easy. Xabi Alonso…Rafa Benitez's biggest mistake as Liverpool manager was trying to push Alonso out the club in order to buy Gareth Barry the season before Alonso left.

@XabiAlonso best passer I've seen.

The Spaniard didn’t want to leave the club but Rafa Benitez essentially told him he was free to leave because Gareth Barry was on his way to Anfield – a deal which ultimately never materialised.
There were a lot of shouts for Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez but both players pushed for their own exits while Alonso was virtually pushed out of the club by Rafa which the Spanish manager would probably admit was the biggest mistake he made as Liverpool boss.
It’s an absolute pity that we were never able to see more of Xabi Alonso in a Liverpool kit.
