Garth Crooks gushes over Mane and Milner
BBC football writer Garth Crooks has been gushing over Sadio Mane and James Milner after Liverpool beat Leicester City.
They were the Reds’ two main men at Anfield and they assisted each other’s goals and while Mane’s theatrics in the penalty area earned criticism from non-Liverpool factions, it was a crucial moment in the game and indeed the Premier League season so far.
In fact, had the game not taken on a slightly more hysterical note than was possibly predicted beforehand, Mane’s run and finish and Milner’s ball to find him in the first half would not have been brushed over so easily.
Writing for BBC Sports, Crooks gushed: “It is Milner’s coolness under extreme pressure that is so impressive and should Liverpool lift the title, he is a player that can seriously be considered for the Footballer of the Year award, if only for his service to the game. Or should that be an OBE?”.
On Mane, he said: “Regardless of that decision, Mane was back to his sparkling best and Leicester’s Marc Albrighton should have known better than to lay even a finger on the Senegal international in the box.”
While Milner is an unlikely shout for Player of the Year, Mane’s displays this season will have made him an early-season contender for the coveted accolade.
The former Southampton talisman has scored five goals and assisted one so far this season.
