Salzburg forward confident on beating Liverpool

Salzburg forward Erling Haaland is confident that his team has what it takes to defeat Liverpool next month in the Champions League.

A 1-0 win at home would be enough to send Salzburg into the last 16 of the Champions League, as Liverpool could not defeat Napoli at Anfield last night to secure a spot in the knockout rounds.

Salzburg were 4-1 victors at Genk last night, where Haaland scored a goal from the bench, but he accepts Salzburg have to defeat a truly great side to progress beyond Group E.

“They (Liverpool) are the world’s best team,” Haaland said, as quoted by Goal.

“But we know we are good at home and if we are at our top level, we have a chance.”

Liverpool defeated Salzburg 4-3 at Anfield earlier in the campaign, but the Austrian side showed they have the ability to cause problems. However, Jurgen Klopp is confident his team has what it takes to progress.

“I don’t want to say we need it [the pressure], but we had it always,” said Klopp, as quoted by ClickLiverpool.

“I’m four years in, tell me when it was easy last year, we had to win at home 1-0 against Napoli, I cannot remember a bigger pressure game than that.

“So, really difficult, and we did it. Now, we have to go to Salzburg.

“In this moment, the game is over, my problem is Fabinho is injured and Brighton, not Salzburg, not at all.

“But I know how human beings are; people wished we could finish the group tonight and make kind of a holiday game in Salzburg.

“That’s the situation – if we have ambitions in the Champions League, we have to show that in Salzburg; until then, we have to show our ambitions in the Premier League.”

The clash between Salzburg and Liverpool will take place on December 10 at the Red Bull Arena.
