Liverpool reportedly interested in profitable one-off friendly

Liverpool and Anfield.

Liverpool Football Club are holding talks regarding a one-off friendly in China next summer, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

Liverpool have not ventured to Asia since the 2017 pre-season tour, but there is every chance Liverpool could return come July 2020.

According to Ornstein, Liverpool are more than open to the idea of playing a one-off game in China next summer, rather than completing an entire pre-season tour.

“Liverpool are in talks over holding a lucrative pre-season friendly in China in July,” Ornstein said in his piece for The Athletic.

“Plans are yet to be finalised with negotiations ongoing but a one-off game in China is viewed as more likely than a week-long tour.

“Klopp is keen to ensure that his squad are based in Europe for most of the pre-season programme and owners Fenway Sports Group will give him what he wants.”

Playing this game would make sense for the Reds from a business perspective. The club are arguably on the verge of winning the Premier League this season, and there is no denying that having the champions of England in your country is considered an honour. This match would certainly sell.

One also has to consider that Liverpool have recently signed a kit deal with Nike. This one-off friendly would be a superb opportunity to promote the new kits that are going to be released.
