Pep Guardiola gives verdict on where Man City stand compared to Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes that his side cannot compete with Liverpool and the other big teams within Europe.

The Citizens sit 14 points off the league leaders Liverpool, which will make it difficult for the reigning champions to recover the gap between now and the end of the season.

However, due to the quality and depth within the City squad, they still remain a threat to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

According to Guardiola, though, his side cannot compete with what Liverpool are currently producing. The Reds have only dropped points in one league game this season, which was the 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

It was not just Liverpool that he claimed his side could not compete with. He named many of Europe’s big teams.

“We have to improve and accept it and move forward,” Guardiola told BBC Sport.

“[Manchester] United have the quality to defend and the quality to attack on the counter-attack and you have to accept that.

“That is the level we face against Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus. They are the teams we have to face and the reality is maybe we are not able now to compete with them.

“Maybe we need to live that as a club to improve, to accept the reality now and improve.”

These comments are quite bizarre from Guardiola. We are only in December, meaning there is still plenty of time in the season. There is almost a sense that he has given up completely.

Liverpool face Watford at Anfield next weekend in the Premier League. Manchester City travel to the Emirates Stadium to face a struggling Arsenal outfit.
