Virgil van Dijk deserves Ballon d’Or

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is simply pleased to be nominated for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

The Dutchman had a superb 2018-19 season, which included taking home the prestigious Champions League trophy.

There is no denying Van Dijk would be a worthy winner of the Ballon d’Or, but the award tends to favour the attacking players who have been nominated.

The winner of the Ballon d’Or will be announced tonight, with Lionel Messi the favourite to take home the prestigious individual award.

“I am going to have a look at what it is about. I am going to be there for a reason and there are no losers on the evening,” said Van Dijk, as quoted by Goal.

“I am very proud to be in that bracket, to be in there for the way I performed with the team last year and also with the country.

“It is just something to be proud of because not a lot of players go there and are up for these kind of things.

“There’s going to be a winner but there are no losers. We will see what happens.”

Van Dijk has every reason to be pleased about being nominated, but considering the way he has played in recent times, it would be an injustice if he did not take home the award tonight.
