Steve McManaman gives verdict on whether Liverpool should sign Norwich midfielder

Former Red Steve McManaman does not see Liverpool signing Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell in the summer.

Cantwell, 21, has had a solid season for Norwich City thus far. His form has got many people in the football world talking.

With Norwich City likely to get relegated come the end of the season, Cantwell could well and truly be looking for a move away from Carrow Road.

The Reds have been linked with a summer move for the midfielder. However, McManaman does not believe the 21-year-old has done enough to warrant a move to Anfield as of this moment.

“In the future possibly, but I don’t think he’s done enough yet to warrant playing at that level,” McManaman told horseracing.net, as quoted by The Sport Review.

“I get the fact that he wants to play at a higher level. I get the fact that he thinks he’s playing well in a struggling Norwich team. That’s completely understandable.

“It would surprise me if Liverpool were very interested in him, considering the younger kids Liverpool have in and around the squad at that under-23 level.

“Again, we will wait and see. I can only take on face value what I’ve seen of Todd Cantwell and he’s done well in various games.

“Norwich has a lot of really good young players and have done for a number of years so you have to trust what they’re doing down at Carrow Road.”

McManaman is correct. The youngster no doubt has talent, but he has not been playing at a high enough level for long enough.

The move to Liverpool would arguably not be any good for his development. He would be competing for a spot in Liverpool’s midfield, which is currently stacked with talent.

Perhaps in the future Cantwell could be a Liverpool player, but for the time being, he is better off elsewhere.
