The Liverpool manager was too excited to sleep on Melwood Reopens Eve.

Melwood hosted Liverpool player training for the first time in a long time on Wednesday. Jürgen Klopp spent time on the pitch with ten players over a few sessions, beginning the process of preparing for the Premier League to restart on June 19th.

Klopp was pleased with the fitness of his returning players and clearly overjoyed to be back in the swing of football things.

“I hope that all the people watch the footage today and see us back,” said Klopp, speaking to the club’s official site.

“It is a commercial for Liverpool football because the weather is brilliant, Melwood a completely silent place, five players on one pitch and you don’t get mixed up [with], ‘Who is that?’ – you see exactly who is who in which situations.

“The boys are full of smiles, in really, really good spirits. The session was nice, not too intensive, so if you can watch it I would recommend it because I enjoyed it already – and I will see it another two times today, so lucky me!”

Klopp and the coaching staff will approach these next several weeks as they would a preseason, building match fitness and working the team up to full performance speed. Project Restart still has an uncertain fate given the general uncertainty of the pandemic but Premier League clubs returning to training facilities is an encouraging sign.

“We prepare for the future,” said Klopp, “when the future will start, we don’t know yet.”
