Your Transfer Rumour is Bullshit: Liverpool Bid €25M for Backup Goalkeeper

Liverpool have been linked with Uğurcan Çakır before. News of a supposed firm offer only highlights how daft the rumours are.

Liverpool aren’t going to be making many deals this offseason, and their long-planned move for Leipzig’s £50M star attacker Timo Werner might not even go through due to coronavirus concerns and the uncertain financial situation.

In that light, talk of the club spending a world record £89M fee to bring in a player like Kalidou Koulibaly—who turns 29 in June and is three years older than Virgil van Dijk was when Liverpool moved for him—seem faintly ridiculous.

Even more ridiculous is persistent chatter out of Turkey that the Reds are going to spend €25M to bring in 24-year-old Trabzonspor goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır—chatter that was ridiculous enough when it started last summer.

And most ridiculous of all is word today from supposedly reliable journalists in Turkey that Liverpool have put in an honest to goodness bid of €25M for him. Like now. This week. In the midst of a global pandemic and widespread financial uncertainty.

Liverpool are said to plan to loan Çakır out to somewhere in Europe for at least two years starting whenever next season starts if Trabzonspor accept their €25M bid. Or so says the journalist, Haberturk’s Serdar Ali Celikler.

Our kindest reading of the situation is that Çakır’s agent is doing what he can and talking to the press in order to get his client—who’s on a low money, long-term deal through 2024—a raise or a move to a bigger club somewhere.

Because Liverpool aren’t spending €25M this summer of all summers to bring in either a backup for Alisson—aka the best in the world at his position and still just 27 years of age—or a developmental 24-year-old to ship straight out on loan.

That’s really all their is to it, and this rumour has been and remains so preposterously daft that we’ve done our best not to even acknowledge it. The suggestion an actual, firm, €25M bid has been made, though, did seem worth noting derisively.
