Four Liverpool Players Named Finalists for PFA Player of the Year
Jordan and Sadio and Virgil and Trent face off against Kevin and Raheem for the top player prize.
So far, there have been three Player of the Season awards handed out for the Premier League. The first, the Football Writers’ award, went to Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson. The second, awarded by the league, went to Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. The third, voted on by fans, went to Liverpool’s Sadio Mané.
Now, though, we get to the big one. The PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, always the last one handed out—and this year especially delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic—and widely considered the most important of the lot.
Today, the final six were announced, and it’s not entirely surprising to see four Reds and two players in City blue on the list. For the title winners there’s Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. For the runners-up there’s Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling—perhaps the only mild surprise here.
It’s probably safe to rule out Sterling along with last year’s winner, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. And in the end, the question will perhaps be whether enough of the vote coalesces around one of Henderson or Mané to win it—as any kind of a vote split would seem to assure De Bruyne takes the prize.
Meanwhile, Young Player of the Year sees a finalist list of Tamy Adraham, Mason Greenood, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka—all up against Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold, with his presence on the senior Player of the Year finalist list likely assuring that he takes the prize.
The winners of both prizes are set to be announced on Tuesday, September 8th.
