Melissa Lawley, Rinsola Babajide, and Rachel Furness were on the mark in the second half to lead Liverpool to their first victory of the FA Women’s Championship season

After a disappointing draw last week, the Liverpool Women traveled to London today, looking to get off the mark today against the London Bees at the aptly named The Hive stadium. The Bees, affiliated with Barnet FC, finished fifth in the Championship last season.

Jessica Clarke, who impressed as a substitute last week, got the start up top over new signing Amalie Thestrup. Vicky Jepson chose Clarke after she showed much more of a link up game with Rinsola Babajide and Rachel Furness in the second half against Durham.

Liverpool started the game brightly, as last weeks goalscorer Rachel Furness went close twice. The Reds had a couple more chances in the first half, but were stonewalled by the Bees keeper Sarah Quantrill.

Liverpool finally broke through early in the second half as Melissa Lawley was able to tuck the ball into the net from close range. It was all Liverpool after that. Rinsola Babajide was able to produce some more of her magic, striking from a tight angle. It’s been a great week for Babajidae, who earned her first call up for the England National Team.

Rachel Furness closed out the scoring with a header in stoppage time.

Two games into the season, there are five teams tied at the top of the table, including Liverpool, with four points. The Reds are off next weekend for an international break, and will pick back up at home against Charlton Athletic on September 27.
