Gini Wijnaldum’s current Liverpool deal expires at the end of the season and past extension efforts have failed.

It still seems likely that when the current season ends, so too will Gini Wijnaldum’s time at the club, with the veteran midfielder looking for either a new challenge or perhaps one last big contract on the free agent market.

However, it seems obvious that the player is highly valued by manager Jürgen Klopp, and that has led to a claim by Eurosport that the Liverpool manager wants the club to make one last push to get an extension done.

Past efforts to extend the 30-year-old Dutch international beyond the current season in Red ended in failure, with most reports suggesting that it was in fact term and not money that was the key sticking point.

That the club might be unwilling to do a big money deal that spans another four or five years for a player going into his thirties probably shouldn’t be surprising—and is probably reasonable, from a finances viewpoint.

As Liverpool have struggled with injuries and the congested schedule this season, though, Wijnaldum’s importance to the side has been reaffirmed. Hopefully there is still a will and way to get an extension done.
