According to the “Here we go!” guy.

It’s been a strange Virgil van Dijk-filled news day. According to Italian journalist and transfer rumour hawker Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool FC are set to hand their big guy in the middle of defence a whopping five-year extension to his current contract, despite the player currently being sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Speaking to the Que Golazo podcast, Romano said:

Liverpool want in the new year to open new talks with the agent of Virgil van Dijk to extend his contract.

They are so happy with the player, and van Dijk is so happy with Liverpool, so immediately after his injury they were saying ‘ok you are injured, but, you are our leader, so we also want you in the future.

At the moment he has two more seasons of his contract at Liverpool, but they’re ready to extend for the next five years, so those talks are going to take place in the new year.

Liverpool will go with van Dijk in the future, they don’t want to sell him. Jurgen Klopp is absolutely a big fan of van Dijk.

An extension was rumoured in the off-season before Jordan Pickford did what Jordan Pickford does, so this isn’t coming out of nowhere. However, if true, it sounds like the club has plenty of confidence that big Virg will be back to his best on the pitch, and is also a big statement of the value the club places on the many other intangibles he brings along off it - his leadership, cool vibes, and impeccable hair. Come back soon, big lad.
