Klopp on Houllier’s Passing: “It’s a really, really, really sad day”
The current Liverpool boss pays tribute to Gérard Houllier.
The football world mourned the passing of legendary manager Gérard Houllier on Monday when the news broke. Tributes have come pouring in throughout the day from his former players, making it clear that the Frenchman was both revered and loved by those who knew him well.
Among the people adding their voices were former Liverpool captain and vice-captain Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. The Scouse duo were both promoted to the first team under Houllier and participated in the the famous treble-winning season.
Naturally, current Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was also asked for his memories of Houllier, and he had fond words to pass along.
“It is really, really, really a sad day,” Klopp told the official site. “I didn’t know Gérard too well – I met him a couple of times, but in those few moments he created a relationship with me which was really special.
“He is a true Liverpool legend and he is a true coaching legend. He was really influential in the game. A great coach, but a human being who gave you a really warm feeling when you were around him. For all of us it is a big loss and a really sad day.”
Houllier retired from managing in 2011, after illness caused him to miss most of the 2010-11 season with Aston Villa.
Despite the fact that it’s been nearly 20 years since he last managed the Reds, he is nonetheless still regarded warmly by Liverpool fans the world over.
