Klopp Talk: “I’m Quite Happy That 2020 Is Nearly Over”

Jürgen Klopp reflected on a year that saw one big thing worth celebrating surrounded by an awful lot that wasn’t.

Liverpool won the Premier League in 2020, their first league title in three decades. It was a moment very much worth celebrating for all involved. It was about the only moment in 2020 really worth celebrating for all involved.

That was Jürgen Klopp’s take when asked about the year that was for him, both personally and professionally: one big moment worth celebrating surrounded an awful lot that wasn’t.

“One highlight and a lot of challenges,” was how the Liverpool manager summed up the past year. “The highlight was becoming champions, the the rest were big, big challenges and we will face a few more challenges in life.

“So I’m quite happy that 2020 is nearly over now, to be honest. Apart from becoming champions it is not a year I will want to think about a lot in the future.”

The problem, of course, is that the turning of the calendar doesn’t magically solve the problems that made 2020 so much more difficult than usual for most of the world, with coronavirus surging again and lockdowns taking effect.

There is, though, at least some small hope for 2021. Maybe not for straight away, but eventually. That things will get better and some of 2020’s challenges fade a little.

“For about the last 30 years I have only ever wished at New Year for my family to stay healthy,” Klopp added. “That has never happened with more conviction than this year because that’s all I’m concerned about.

“All other problems we can sort but what happened in 2020 is a new experience for all of us. So 2020 had one highlight and all the rest was all big challenges.”
