Klopp Talk: Super Cup Can Be “Final Proof” of Liverpool’s Return to Top of Europe

Jürgen Klopp says Wednesday’s Super Cup is special because of why the Reds are in it.

After a summer of celebration and congratulations, Liverpool now need to go out and be greedy again. That’s Jürgen Klopp’s message to his players with another season kicking off and a chance for the players to start it off with a piece of silverware.

“Stay greedy,” the manager told UEFA.com. “That’s very important. I have no doubt about that, but it’s clear that we have to do that. After the final we had about four weeks where everybody was [celebrating] and it was brilliant wherever we went.

”It’s nice, but in a different world things like this can soften you and it can take the power out of you a bit. We are not like this, but it could happen, [so] we have to do the same again—and with things we maybe didn’t do too well, we have to do better.”

Going toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the Community Shield, edging the defending league champions on the run of play but falling in the shootout, then beating Norwich City comfortably in the league opener, has made for a promising start.

Now come Chelsea in the Super Cup on Wednesday from Istanbul, and for Klopp, it’s both a reward and an opportunity for the Reds after having won last season’s Champions League—a game that matters mostly because of why the Reds are in it.

“The Super Cup is the final proof,” he added “If you are not in that game, it means you didn’t win the final. That’s completely different, so we’re looking forward to it. It’s a big one.”
