Chelsea Want to “Take Our Anger out Against Liverpool” Following Valencia Defeat

Liverpool weren’t the only side left frustrated on Tuesday night in Champions League action.

Liverpool felt hard done by Tuesday’s Champions League result, a 2-0 defeat at Napoli assisted by a called penalty that was upheld by VAR despite replays showing the Napoli player going airborne prior to any minimal contact.

They aren’t the only ones feeling that way today. Their next opponents, Chelsea, feel pretty much the same—disappointed and more than a little annoyed—after losing 1-0 to Valencia in a game that saw a violent studs-up tackle ignored by the referee and VAR.

“It’s a test of character,” said striker Tammy Abraham of Chelsea’s need to put the result behind them and focus on their next game. “We can take our anger out against Liverpool. We’ll look forward to putting things right.”

Chelsea’s annoyance, though, isn’t just about an uncalled red card. It’s about their own failures in a game that saw them well short of their best—and that saw Ross Barkley miss the penalty that would have levelled things up for them.

“We’re fuming we lost today,” Abraham added. “But there’s still five [Champions League group stage] games to go. We didn’t play our best football. Valencia came and stopped us playing, so you have to give them credit.”
