Official: Liverpool Sign Calum Scanlon from Birmingham City Academy
The England Youth International signed his Liverpool contract today.
Liverpool have completed the signing of 15-year-old defender/midfielder Calum Scanlon from Birmingham City’s academy for a reported fee of £500,000. As Noel wrote yesterday, the two clubs had apparently reached an agreement, and Scanlon confirmed the move via Instagram today when he shared a picture of himself signing his Liverpool contract.
The U-15 England International is capable of playing at left-back or in the midfield, and this versatility was likely very appealing to the Liverpool coaching staff. He will now join a youth system that has proved very capable of producing a steady stream of Premier League talent in recent months.
Academy graduates Curtis Jones, Rhys Williams, Neco Williams, Nat Phillips, and Caoimhin Kelleher have all made important contributions to the defending Premier League Champions during an injury-plagued season thus far.
As Noel mentioned, this is certainly a signing for the future rather than immediate reinforcements, but it points to the health of Liverpool’s academy system. It shows that promising youth players see the LFC academy as a destination for them to have a real shot at becoming high-level professional footballers.
It will likely be some time before Scanlon has a shot at first-team football for the Reds, but this move will hopefully give him the opportunity to prove he has what it takes to play Premier League football. Good luck and YNWA Calum.
