Liverpool’s breakout new signing of last season is looking to take his next step in front of the fans.

With Liverpool now into their third week of pre-season, many of the players who represented their countries over the summer have begun to rejoin the team, including last season’s breakout attacking star and Portuguese international Diogo Jota.

For Jota and the Reds, it’s still hard to say exactly how he fits into the lineup, whether it’s starting on the wing, at false nine, or as a high energy bench option. In the end, though, his obvious preference is to start—and he believes that flexibility helps him.

“I like to be on the field, no matter which position,” Jota told the club’s website. “Of course, being able to play in different roles gives you an extra advantage. It’s good for a player to have that ability—and that’s one thing I’m looking to improve on as well.”

Whatever his role ends up being this season, he’s also looking forward to getting to play in front of a full Anfield for the first time after a season when there was never more than a partial crowd allowed in the stadium—and more often than not not even that.

After a 2020-21 campaign that saw him score 13 goals in 30 appearances with a goal every 136 minutes he was on the pitch, the thought of an even more energized Jota running at defenders will be something every Liverpool fan is looking forward to.

“I’m still really looking forward to playing at a full Anfield,” he added. “Hopefully that can happen this season. With a crowd there, it’s always more positive. I feel like we missed this in England and every part of the world and we are getting that back slowly.”
