The attacking midfielder’s Liverpool future may not be entirely certain but a proposed loan move makes little sense.
Liverpool have already seen a number of fringe players depart the club this summer with Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Taiwo Awoniyi, Kamil Grabara, and Liam Millar all completing permanent transfers away from Anfield.
Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to follow, but that will still leave a handful of players whose futures seem less than certain. Players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who in the past has been linked with West Ham and has been again today.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made an instant impact when he joined the Reds from Arsenal and earned himself a regular role as one of manager Jürgen Klopp’s favourites, but injuries soon became a significant issue for him.
Now, Liverpool and the player himself are faced with a conundrum: whether he should be kept as a depth option in the hopes he can rediscover his old form, or moved on to raise funds for the club and a give the player a better chance at playing time.
However, the latest Oxlade-Chamberlain rumours care of The Express claim West Ham’s interest in him this summer has only ever been on loan, which rather than improving the odds of his departure would seem to dampen them.
The Reds are said to be braced for The Hammers’ approach, but it’s hard to see the value to the club to letting a homegrown squad player depart on loan given it wouldn’t raise funds or free up space for a non-English signing.
Unless there is a club out there looking at Oxlade-Chamberlain as a potential permanent signing, his value to Liverpool as homegrown depth make it exceptionally difficult to imagine him moving on from them this summer.
