Jürgen Klopp Expects Porto to Find Extra Motivation to Face Liverpool
A lopsided record in favour of the Reds in their last four Champions League meetings could have Porto fired up.
Liverpool taking on FC Porto in European competition has been something of a regular occurrence since Jürgen Klopp signed on to manage the club, with the two sides facing off in the knockout rounds of the Champions League in both 2018 and 2019.
This season, they meet again but in the group stages, but despite Liverpool having managed a rather lopsided record of three wins and a draw with 11 goals scored to just one against, the Liverpool manager isn’t taking a result for granted.
“Porto always change a little bit,” Klopp noted ahead of Tuesday night’s match. “They have players going out and players coming in. Still the same manager, but it’s not an advantage at all that we won the last two games there, absolutely not.
“You only have to think of yourself in the position of the opponent. The first thing you want is to make sure similar things do not happen again. So that makes the job not easier for us. But we don’t think about the last two games, we only think about this game.”
For Porto, after managing to hold Atletico Madrid to a draw in their first game in the Champions League this season, it will be a chance to earn a measure of revenge—and to leapfrog the Reds into first place in a very difficult Group B.
Meanwhile, in the group’s other match, Atletico Madrid will look to improve on their opening round nil-nil draw against an AC Milan side that lost 3-2 to Liverpool in a game whose final scoreline was a lot closer than it often felt on the run of play.
