Klopp Reveals New Captaincy Order Following Wijnaldum Departure
The team voted on three new leaders to add to their committee.
Four Liverpool leaders have been in place for now for several seasons. The captain of the team is Jordan Henderson, vice-captain is James Milner, and third in line is Virgil van Dijk. In seasons past, Gini Wijnaldum had rounded out the top four and put on the armband when the situation called for it. However, Gini ran off to Paris, so Klopp had some decisions to make.
Chief among them was expanding the pool of potential leaders from four to six, so that if the team gets hit with another debilitating injury crisis, the order is more firmly established. The first team players voted, and the winners were Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, and Alisson Becker — or, as no one but me calls them — The A-Team.
Klopp explained the decision to go from four to six:
“We had three captains in Hendo, Milly, Virg and the players voted for another three,” he said. “So that was won by Trent, Robbo and Alisson Becker. It was just that from time to time last year with the amount of injuries we had, we had no-one available from the players’ committee out on the pitch. So that is why I decided to increase the group to six.”
Andy Robertson already captains the Scotland National Team and so will be familiar with the role, should he be called upon. Many have Alexander-Arnold already slotted into the captain’s position at some point down the line.
It says something about the quality of this team and the players that any one of those six would be an excellent captain, and you could think of another few in the first team who would also do the business as well.
