The boss’s thoughts on Liverpool’s 5-1 Champions League victory over Porto.

Liverpool put on a show in Portugal on Tuesday evening, beating their hosts 5-1, in a match where five goals felt like a show of mercy from the Reds. In his post-match comments, Jurgen Klopp praised his players, but kept a level head about the victory.

“[W]e had a tricky start because obviously Porto watched the Brentford game, started pretty direct,” Klopp said. Brentford managed to play Liverpool to a frustrating 3-3 draw over the weekend.

“We struggled a little bit in the beginning but that’s the reason why we didn’t make a lot of changes, that’s because I wanted that we find the feedback on the pitch and sort the situation there and that’s what we did,” Klopp continued. “From a specific moment on we played really good football. We didn’t use our big chances, we used two half-chances to score, to be 2-0 up. But we had really good football moments, we played good against a side who were fighting obviously for some parts of the game because they lost a centre-half after, or in, the Atletico game and the other centre-half today after warming up.”

Liverpool’s victory keeps them two points above Atlético Madrid in Group B, with more than half the group stage games still to go. They’re also the only team Liverpool have yet to play, and they do not have a particularly glowing European record against the Spanish side.

That game will take place October 19th in Madrid. For now, Liverpool look ahead to this weekend’s marquee matchup against Manchester City, who lost their Champions League game to PSG on Tuesday.
