Liverpool Look to “Take the Positives” from Draw Against Manchester City
Captain Jordan Henderson is disappointed the Reds had the lead twice but allowed City to leave with a point.
Liverpool took the lead twice against Manchester City on Sunday only to see their title rivals equalize on both occasions, leaving the Reds with a point on the day rather than three and meaning that they head into the international break just that one point ahead of City.
It certainly wasn’t a bad result, but feeling as though they had two chances to take all three points and that on both occasions they then allowed City to fight back has an inevitable air of disappointment to it. At least that’s how captain Jordan Henderson sees things.
“It was an intense game,” Henderson reflected. “We knew it would be. It’s always going to be tough, City are a fantastic side. We had some good moments, not-so-good moments. But in the second half I thought we reacted really well with a much better performance.
“We were unlucky probably not to win the game so there’s a little bit of disappointment but I thought we reacted well after coming in at half-time, because I thought we didn’t perform to the levels we’re capable of in the first but we showed a lot of positivity in the second.”
It’s a result that not only keeps City and Liverpool a point apart—the same point apart England’s two top sides are stretching back to the start of the 2018-19 season—but that helps to keep the top of the table looking rather congested entering into October.
After responding well to being beaten handily by City, it’s Chelsea who hold top spot to start October as they sit one point ahead of the Reds in second. Then City are only ahead of not just Man United but also surprise upstarts Everton and Brighton on goal differential.
“We’ve got to learn from our mistakes,” the Liverpool captain added of Sunday afternoon’s draw. “But it’s not the end of the world and there’s still a long way to go—so take the positives and learn from the things we didn’t do so well and be better in the next game.
“For us, it’s just about taking each game as it comes, going for the win every time we play because we’re capable of winning games. But sometimes that’s football. You’ve got to move on, learn from it and be better in the next one.”
