Atletico Madrid Reportedly Sell Only 200 Tickets for Anfield Trip
Coronavirus concerns are said to have supporters of the Spanish side nervous about a return to England.
A year-and-a-half ago, early in 2020, Liverpool took on Atletico Madrid at Anfield in their final game before coronavirus restrictions forced by the rapidly worsening pandemic forced football to a halt in England and around Europe.
The 2,500 Atelti fans who travelled to the match from Madrid, at the time a coronavirus hotspot, were blamed by many for the case rate in Liverpool being higher than many other places in the United Kingdom in the game’s aftermath.
Now, despite that fans are back in attendance and have been for some time, it is expected that only around 200 supporters of the La Liga side will travel to Anfield for tonight’s group stage game between the two sides.
That’s the latest from The Mail’s Dominic King, who suggests that despite the relaxing of travel restrictions between the two countries, many Spaniards are concerned about the rise of COVID-19’s delta variant in the United Kingdom.
The result will be an unusually small travelling contingent for a headlining Champions League match—one that could secure Liverpool a spot in the knockout rounds and that Atleti may need to win to keep their own hopes alive.
Currently, the Reds sit top of Group B with a perfect nine points from the opening three games, while Atleti and Porto are level on four points apiece and AC Milan trail having yet to earn a single point in group stage play.
