Rumour Mongering: Jude Bellingham is “Liverpool Bound”
Skepticism over transfer rumours and sourcing tends to go out the window when it’s something people want to hear.
With their current options in the centre of the pitch not getting any younger or any less prone to picking up injuries, the widespread belief is that Liverpool will have to make a significant midfield signing in the summer of 2022.
And amongst potential significant midfield singings for a club like the Reds, there is likely no more appealing possibility than 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham. So when somebody stands up and says he’s set to join the Reds, people listen.
So we find ourselves today talking about Bellingham to Liverpool due to the appearance of lower league journeyman and former Hartlepool United manager Craig Hignett on BBC Merseyside over the weekend.
“I think I’ve heard it on good authority and I can’t say where I’ve heard it from, but apparently he has been saying that he is Liverpool bound,” Hignett said, adding that Bellingham joining Liverpool is a near certainty as he understands it.
It’s perhaps worth noting Hignett, who managed Hartlepool on England’s north-east coast towards the end of Bellingham’s time at the Birmingham academy in the West Midlands, has no obvious connection to the player or involved clubs.
Still, one expects an ex-player and manager would have connections, and some of those connections might have genuine insight into Bellingham’s case. Certainly Liverpool fans this week will be hoping that’s the case.
Regardless, given how appealing the idea of Bellingham joining the Reds is to many fans of the club, this is a bit of transfer chatter that’s quickly become unavoidable given how well it lines up with what so many people will want to hear and believe.
