Suarez and Atletico Madrid Know Liverpool Have “Some Weaknesses We Could Exploit”
Former Red Luis Suarez will be hoping that his second return to Anfield goes better than the first.
On Wednesday, Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield for the second group stage game between the two. They will also be welcoming Luiz Suarez back to Anfield, a second return for the Uruguayan striker who visited in 2019 with Barcelona.
“Any football player would want to play there,” Suarez recalled of his time at Liverpool. “It was amazing to see the atmosphere at Anfield. Watching the Premier League games was incredible, as was the opportunity to make one of my dreams come true.”
Suarez’ last visit to his former home stadium saw Liverpool defeat Barcelona 4-0 while the fans didn’t react especially well to some of the behaviour of the player many in the stands had cheered when his competitive drive pushed him towards the edge in Red.
The last meeting between his current club and the Reds didn’t go his way, either, with Liverpool beating Atleti 3-2 in Madrid last time out in Europe, all but assuring the English side of qualification while leaving the La Liga outfit in a difficult position.
With group play half way through, Liverpool have a perfect 3-0 record and nine points to top Group B while Atleti and Porto are level on four points as they fight to qualify in second while AC Milan languish behind them, so far winless and in last place.
“The smallest of mistakes, a millisecond in which you’re distracted, in the Champions League you pay for it,” Saurez added. “I think that’s what happened. We started very well, but they are very experienced and they were ahead in the first 20 minutes.
“Every team has its strengths and weaknesses. We know how good Liverpool are when they get the ball up to their attackers. We know they have some weaknesses we could exploit in our favour and we should exploit them again in the next game.
“We have to pay attention because, besides using those strengths, they have an extra player, which is the Anfield crowd, and that makes things harder for us.”
