Three Liverpool Stars Make the Final Cut for Netherlands Euro 2024 Squad
Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch all made the cut for Ronald Koeman’s 26-man Dutch squad.
With the kickoff of Euro 2024 just two weeks away, we’re starting to move past the stage of provisional squads being released and into the first final squad announcements, and from a Liverpool point of view Netherlands are in the running to be the national team with the largest Reds contingent.
Having whittled the quad down to 26, Ronald Koeman has included all three Liverpool players from the provisional squad with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch all making the cut—though it’s hardly surprising to see national team captain Van Dijk and forward Gakpo making it.
Gravenberch isn’t a surprise, either, even if the consensus was that the 22-year-old is perhaps a little further down the pecking order and will likely see fewer minutes at the upcoming summer tournament than his club teammates after a club season that showed promise but not consistency.
Netherlands play in a difficult Group D at the Euros, with the Dutch second favourites behind France—and with Austria and Poland rounding out the group, it wouldn’t be a major shock to see the Oranje fail to advance to the knockouts. Their tournament kicks off against Poland on June 16th.
