Jamie Carragher: “I Still Expect Liverpool to Compete” at Highest Levels
The former Red believes the future is still bright for Liverpool in the post-Klopp Era.
With the Arne Slot Era having officially begun, it’s natural for folks to wonder about what all of this might mean for Liverpool. Following up a legendary manager like Jurgen Klopp would be a tall order for anyone. And given the way such projects went at Manchester United and Arsenal, following the departures of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger respectively, I suppose it’s not so outlandish that one might wonder about what the future might hold for the Reds.
Former Liverpool defender and current pundit, Jamie Carragher, was asked that question and shared his thoughts with the Liverpool Echo.
“I expect us to be competitive, as long as we have a good summer transfer window. We have people behind the scenes. don’t think they had that structure at Man United when Ferguson left. It was the same with Wenger. They were old-fashioned football managers who ran everything and those days have gone.”
Carra goes on to note that he believes Liverpool will compete for everything and should be in the mix.
As I’ve mentioned, the anxieties around a potential drop-off aren’t born of nothing - Arsenal and United both saw brutal stretches in their effort to replace titans of the sport and arguably the best-ever managers either club has had. It’s not nothing as far as concerns go.
But Carra’s point on structures existing at Liverpool that didn’t exist at United and Arsenal are also apt. And to Jurgen Klopp’s credit, there was a willingness to build a project that would outlast him. Among Jurgen’s comments as he left, in fact, was that he felt that there was a good foundation at the club and one that would represent a solid platform from which to build, especially in comparison to the previous summer.
It would be folly to believe that anyone could bring the exact mix of sentiment and results that Jurgen Klopp would. But the ability to take the many good pieces still at the club to put together something competitive and entertaining? I think that’s reasonable to expect. And it’s nice to know that Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, also agrees.
