Andy Robertson On Arne Slot and “exciting new challenge” at Liverpool
The Liverpool left back and Scotland captain thinks new manager Slot is inheriting a strong squad and is excited to see what he can do with it.
After the pomp and ceremony around the departure of Jürgen Klopp, the arrival of Arne Slot as Liverpool’s next head coach has been a comparatively muted affair. For the players, too, with the focus for many on the upcoming Euro 2024 the recent focus hasn’t been quite as much on club issues.
For veteran left back Andy Robertson, though, despite all the success he had during the Klopp era he says he’s excited to see what Slot brings to the table as a trainer and what he can do with one of the top squads in England and all of football when the Euros are over and club football returns.
“It’s an exciting new challenge,” Robertson told Sky during a break in preparations for Scotland’s upcoming Euro 20204 campaign. “Obviously [Klopp] was pretty special and I’ve got a lot to be thankful for but we’re still excited by a new manager coming in with new ideas and a new voice.
“I’m excited to see what can come from that. I’ve got some big stuff coming up before but come pre-season I’ll be focused on the new season at Liverpool and trying to make that successful for him as well—and from all the reports we’ve had the manager’s very good so I can’t wait to see that up close.”
The 30-year-old Scotland captain arrived at Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for a mere £8M and went on to become one of Klopp’s most important players and one of Klopp’s best signings—especially pound for pound—and to date he’s played 297 games over seven season with the Reds.
“We have to be open minded after the last eight or nine years have been pretty special,” Robertson added of the summer’s changes. “Now we’re going a bit into the unknown but you have to see that as exciting. The squad’s in a good place and now we’ve got to carry that forward and go again.”
