Feyenoord defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer looks set to move to Brighton for €30M but Dutch reports claim the Reds have late interest.

Of all the positions Liverpool might plausibly look to strengthen at this summer in the transfer market, going in many people would have highlighted defensive midfield. So far, though, there have been few strong links to players fitting the profile.

However, reports out of the Netherlands today are claiming the Reds could be in the midst of a push to hijack Brighton’s move for 24-year-old Feyenoord star Mats Wieffer, who played 79 games over the past two seasons there under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

De Telegraaf claim they may be too late, with Feyenoord having agreed a €30M transfer fee for Wieffer with Brighton, but if Liverpool’s interest is genuine one would think the presence of Slot at the club along with their higher standing would sway the player.

Wieffer was previously targeted by Atletico Madrid, who tried to sign him in January. At the time, though, the player’s focus was on maximizing his playing time ahead of Euro 2024. In the end, late-season injury issues ruled him out from a potential call-up.

The question now, then, is whether Liverpool are genuinely and seriously interested. If they are, we wouldn’t expect a verbal agreement between Feyenoord and Brighton to be an especially big hurdle given the player’s likely preference to reunite with Slot.
