Official: Sepp van den Berg Signs for Brentford in £25M Transfer Deal
The 22-year-old Dutch centre half joined Liverpool in 2019 and made four senior appearances for the club.
Sepp van den Berg is officially a Brentford player today after the 22-year-old Dutch centre half successfully underwent a medical and put pen to paper to complete his move away from Liverpool football club after five seasons on the Reds’ books.
Brentford agreed a £25M to sign the young defender, with £20M guaranteed up front and £5M in add-ons along with a 17.5% sell-on fee applicable to any profit from a future sale of a player the Reds paid a base £1.3M to sign from PEC Zwolle in June of 2019.
Despite speculation the arrival of a new manager in Arne Slot might mean a chance to stake his claim to a role in the Liverpool squad for the 2024-24 season, Van den Berg signalled early in the summer he preferred moving on in search of playing time.
Bids at the start of the summer from clubs like PEC and and Mainz fell well short of the Reds’ valuation—and resulted in the player signalling his discontent as he felt the club’s transfer fee demands had the potential at least to get in the way of his career.
In the end, though, both Brentford and defending Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen arrived in August with bids matching Liverpool’s valuation and the player was free to determine his own future, picking Brentford and life in the Premier League.
