Liverpool’s impressive defense performances require work from all 11 players on the pitch.

Liverpool have started this season conceding only three goals in the first eight games of the season. Unsurprisingly this show of defensive strength has gotten them to the top of the Premier League. While the Reds are blessed with defenders like Alisson Becker and captain Virgil van Dijk to marshal the back line, attacker Cody Gakpo discussed how he contributes to the effort as well.

“Sometimes it’s not that fun as an attacker because that’s why you are an attacker,” Gakpo admitted, “but I think everybody in our squad is aware of the importance of it and maybe that’s what makes us that good at it at the moment. We have to keep doing that and I think we can even do it a little bit better at some moments. We have to work on that as well, keep on improving and then at the other end show our attacking qualities as well.”

Head coach Arne Slot has put a lot of faith in the Dutchman so far in this early run. He’s made appearances in the 12 matches they’ve played in all competitions. He’s started in five of them, including the last three in a row, proving that the boss believes he has what it takes to fight for a place in the team.

When asked about the morale, Gakpo is clearly loving the vibes.

“I think we have a very good spirit. We know that we have to fight for each other, and I think we’re actually enjoying it as well. I think that’s one of our strengths,” he said.

It’s easy to forget, in the midst of the good feelings, that it’s only the end of October, and there’s a long, long way to go. Next up is a North London battle against in form Arsenal.

“Arsenal are a very good side,” Gakpo conceded. “They showed in recent years that they are very good. They have a lot of qualities all over the pitch. We will go there and try to play our best game and we will go there for the win. It’s going to be a tough game, we know that, but we have to be ready for that.”

Arsenal will likely be their biggest challenge so far this season. Winning at the Emirates for the first time in two seasons in the league will putting them back on top of the table and be a show of intent for their big ambitions this season.
