Dominik Szoboszlai Targeting Premier League and Champions League Glory
The Liverpool midfielder and Hungary captain’s dream is to win the Champions League—and a Premier League title to go with it wouldn’t be bad, either.
Where JĂĽrgen Klopp’s high octane approach to football tended to place the focus on both the attack and the defence in his seasons in charge at Liverpool, the opening months of the Arne Slot era have seen midfield pushed to the fore.
There’s a case to be made, even, that his preferred trio of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister deep while Dominik Szoboszlai pushes forward to play off the central striker are the top three performers of the season to date for the Reds.
For Szoboszlai, though, the focus isn’t on how well he and his midfield compatriots have performed so far—it’s on continuing to perform well and to hopefully play a key role in the Reds taking home a few big pieces of silverware.
“I want to win the Champions League,” was his answer recently in an interview with Men in Blazers when asked what his top target is as a footballer. “When I was a kid, first I wanted to hear the anthem on the field, then I wanted to score.
“Then I wanted to be a national-team player, then I wanted to be a captain. Now, as I’m playing in the Premier League, of course I want to win the Premier League with Liverpool. And I want to win the Champions League as well.”
The Hungary national team face Netherlands and Bosnia in the Nations League over the next week before Szoboszlai returns to Liverpool ahead of a busy two months that will test both his quality and Liverpool’s status as title contenders.
The next seven league dates include Chelsea, Aston Villa, Brighton and Man City visiting Anfield along with a road date against Arsenal while in Europe the Reds take on Leipzig, Leverkusen, and Real Madrid in the Champions League.
