Martín Zubimendi Cool On Rumours of Manchester City Interest
Following City star Rodri’s season-ending injury, many worried a player who turned down Liverpool in the summer could join a rival in January.
Six weeks ago, it rather felt as though Liverpool’s season might hinge on their ability to convince Martín Zubimendi to leave behind the mountains and pintxos of Basque country and make the switch from Real Sociedad to Liverpool.
Since then, though, Zubimendi’s decision to stick it out with his boyhood club has turned out to have no discernible negative impact on the Reds, with Ryan Gravenberch stepping up to play the six and arguably the Premier League player of the season to date.
However, with rivals for the top of the English table Manchester City seeing star holding midfielder Rodri pick up a season ending injury, some worried a January move to join Pep Guadriola’s side might be on the cards to rankle the Reds.
“There are always rumours but so far I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad,” Zubimendi insisted when asked if he might go back on his decision to stay at Sociedad if City come calling in January.
“I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here. It’s a shame [Rodri picked up an] injury, especially when he’s a vital player for us, but a window is opened [with Spain] that I have to make the most out of.”
Rodri’s season-ending injury may not in the end lead Zubimendi to Manchester, then, but it’s certainly an opportunity at the international level for the player who almost joined the Reds last summer and fills a similar role as the City star.
