The defender was bleeding as he came off at halftime during Saturday’s match.

One of the more worrisome events of Saturday’s match against Brighton was when Ibrahima Konate had to come off during the half after suffering an injury to what looked like his hand just before the break. The defender had fallen in the scrum of a corner and captain Virgil van Dijk accidentally stepped on his hand, leaving him to come off at the half, cradling the injury in his shirt with blood seeping in. It was quite a sight. Joe Gomez came on during the second half to take his place, but for an already injury stricken squad, losing our first choice centerback is not helpful.

Thankfully, it is not as bad as it looked.

Konate posted on his Instagram account on Sunday to assure fans that the injury was not serious and there was no break found, and even better that he’ll be ready for our next game against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday.

While Joe Gomez was a more than capable replacement for Konate in the back, not to mention his two shots on goal, Konate’s performances since the season has started are one of the main reasons we’ve been so successful in these opening months. Losing him would be a huge blow to an already suffering squad.
