Liverpool’s Joe Gomez Likely Sidelined for “Quite a Bit” Due to Injury
A full scan of the centre half’s damaged hamstring will be required to set a firm timeline for Gomez’ recovery.
Over the years, any time Joe Gomez has been given the chance to play regularly in Liverpool’s defence the 27-year-old has acquitted himself well, quickly finding his feet and his form and making a strong case for being good enough to be a regular starter in a title contending side.
Over the years, any time Joe Gomez has been given the chance to play regularly in Liverpool’s defence it seems an injury soon arrives to set him back again. Such was the case again on Sunday, when Gomez was forced off after 37 minutes against West Ham due to a hamstring strain.
“You saw today the injury for Joe Gomez,” manager Arne Slot said after the match when asked about its severity. “We all know it’s a hamstring and we all know it’s going take a while before he is back. I don’t know how long but he will be out for quite a bit. These situations can happen in a season.”
The best case scenario would have been a strain or pull that might have kept Gomez out of action for a week or two, but even a mild tear would see a return timeline in the one to two months neighbourhood. More significant hamstring damage can require as much as a six-month recovery.
Gomez’ immediate removal and Slot’s post-match reaction suggest a best case scenario is off the table, which shifts hopes to him being able to return towards the end of January. Fortunately for Liverpool, centre half Ibrahima Konaté is likely around a week away from his own return from injury.
Liverpool host Manchester City in the league next weekend before facing Tottenham in the League Cup, Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, Forest, Brentford, and Ipswich in the league, and Lille and PSV in the Champions League in a January that will be busy but on paper appears manageable.
