A hamstring injury for Joe Gomez and a busy fixture list mean young centre half Jarell Quansah will get plenty of minutes in January.

Last season, when injuries gave him a chance, 21-year-old centre half Jarell Quansah seized the opportunity and forced his way up the Liverpool depth chart, ending the season as de facto first choice partner for club captain Virgil van Dijk.

The young defender was seen to take a step back to start the 2024-25 season, allowing first Ibrahima Konaté and then Joe Gomez to take minutes ahead of him, but Quansah remains a massively promising talent—and knows that, once again, it’s about waiting for a chance.

“It’s the training we’ve put in and just knowing that you are ready,” he said after coming off the bench against West Ham following a Gomez hamstring strain. “I think the coaching staff have done a great job of helping us with that.

“Obviously I’ve not played too many minutes but just being ready will always put me in good stead. You’re training a lot, running a lot, but it’s just trying to keep your body ready and training good habits. That’s what you’ve got to do, just stay ready.”

Liverpool recorded a 5-0 shutout on Sunday while holding West Ham to 0.52xG as the Reds won all three points in comfortable and convincing fashion, making it difficult to find fault in the performance of Quansah or any other Liverpool player.

He will likely get another chance on Sunday against Manchester United, and even with Ibrahima Konaté due back from his own injury layoff at some point over the next week there will be chances over the next month with Liverpool facing a hectic fixture list.

Between league games, two domestic cup competitions, and the final two Champions League league phase fixtures, the Reds have a full eight matches coming up in January and with Gomez out there will be cee minutes for Quansah.

It’s such a massive game but I just see it as another game we need to win,” Quansah added of the Reds’ upcoming match against struggling historic rivals Manchester United. “Anything I can do to help the team, if I’m asked to do so, then I’ll be ready.”
